Why Phishing Attacks Spike In August

August 18, 2025

As you and your team return from vacation, remember that cybercriminals never take a break. Recent research from ProofPoint and Check Point reveals a surge in phishing attacks during summer months. Here's how to stay vigilant and safeguard your business.

Why Are Phishing Attacks Rising in Summer?

Cybercriminals exploit the summer travel season by impersonating popular hotel and Airbnb platforms, according to Check Point Research. They report a staggering 55% rise in new travel-related domain registrations in May 2025 compared to last year. Out of 39,000+ domains, 1 in 21 was flagged as malicious or suspicious.

Additionally, the back-to-school period triggers a spike in phishing emails mimicking legitimate university communications aimed at students and staff. Even if your industry isn't directly targeted, employees checking personal emails on work devices can inadvertently open the door to cyberattacks with just one wrong click.

How to Protect Yourself and Your Team

While AI enhances cybersecurity defenses, it also helps attackers craft more convincing phishing emails. Training your team to recognize threats is critical to prevent breaches.

Follow these safety tips to reduce your risk:

• Scrutinize suspicious emails. Don't rely solely on spotting typos or poor grammar—AI can generate polished messages. Verify the sender's email address and hover over links to check their true destination.

• Verify URLs carefully. Watch for misspellings or unusual domain endings like .today or .info, which are common in scam sites.

• Access websites directly. Avoid clicking links in emails; instead, type the URL into your browser or use a trusted search engine.

• Enable Multifactor Authentication (MFA). MFA adds an extra layer of security, protecting your credentials and sensitive data even if a breach occurs.

• Use caution on public WiFi. When accessing sensitive information over public networks, always use a VPN to secure your connection.

• Keep personal emails off work devices. Mixing personal and work accounts increases vulnerability. Use separate devices for personal and professional activities.

• Consult your MSP about endpoint security. Endpoint Detection and Response (EDR) tools monitor devices, block phishing threats, and alert your managed service provider immediately if a breach happens, minimizing data exposure.

Phishing tactics are evolving rapidly, fueled by AI advancements. The best defense is empowering your team with knowledge and vigilance. Stay alert, stay protected!
